Danny Boyle has been directing movies since the mid nineties. "Trainspotting" , released in 1996, made the headline as an eye opener of the Edinburgh drug scene. "The beach" adapted from a novel by Alex Garland became in year 2000 a symbolic movie for the youth who seeks to explore dangerous new paradisiac territories. "Slumdog Millionaire" is his recent movie and definitely his most respected and successful work to date.
We are taken to India from the very first scene. The only anglo bit is the language (widely spoken in India) and the british tourists who visit the Taj Mahal. "Who wants to be a millionaire" is a popular television game show produced in many countries. Here, the whole movie is centred around this show where our 18 year old hero is about to win the top price. As a poor survivor of the Indian slums, he is quickly suspected of cheating. Through numerous flash backs we are introduced to his past and how his life experiences are the reasons of knowing the right answers.
We might have issues believing in some naively written scenes but saying this we are accomplices and avid supporters of the young hero's challenges. We follow all the episodes of his difficult life with the hope of an ultimate win. Danny Boyle has the reputation of not being soft. Violence is part of the daily routine. However, this is a movie about hope in changing times. What a great way to make a powerful statement.
"Slumdog Millionaire" is expected to create the big surprise at this year oscars. Unfortunately looking at the nomination list, i am disappointed to see that it hasn't got the chance to win the best motion picture. Danny Boyle will for sure win the oscar for the best director.
Highly recommended and worth looking on the big screen. And please don't leave the movie theatre when the end credits appear.
